Sustainability

June 23, 2013

Sanofi is respected as a global leader in healthcare, partly because of the benefits of our medicines and vaccines, and also because of the ethical way we engage with patients, customers, colleagues, suppliers and healthcare authorities.

Being a global healthcare leader involves working for social progress and economic development with respect for the environment.  In the UK, as elsewhere, our approach to sustainability is integral to our strategy and values in terms of our business activities, social responsibility commitments and environmental performance.  We aim to meet patient expectations while balancing access to healthcare with innovation and respect for intellectual property.

Our global governance encompasses sustainability initiatives adapted to all our stakeholders: employees, patients and patient associations, the general public, healthcare professionals, suppliers and subcontractors, non-governmental organisations, the media, shareholders and investors, government agencies and competitors.

Our sustainability approach is based in four areas:

Patients - at the centre of the Group's business

Providing access to health is a major challenge for all societies.  In the knowledge that most people in the world can't even get medicines, Sanofi works to improve access to healthcare in developing and industrialised countries.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends widening access to medicines by being flexible with respect to intellectual property rights.  This offers opportunities to develop new markets, but also risks criticism for not responding fast enough.  We have therefore set up specific programmes in areas of our therapeutic expertise to target major diseases that affect developing countries.  These are in addition to R&D investments to develop adapted and non-patented products, sales at differentiated prices and drug and vaccine donations.

Ethics - the moral compass that informs our decisions, choices and actions

At every level our economic performance is founded in ethical practice, legal and regulatory compliance and high standards of social and environmental responsibility.

Healthcare professionals and other stakeholders expect industry to provide reliable product information in a way that facilitates competition without promoting the overuse of medicines.  Having implemented strict internal rules for ensuring responsible marketing practices, Sanofi has the systems in place for maintaining the vital climate of mutual trust and transparency with healthcare authorities, prescribing physicians and patients.

People - employees, customers, stakeholders, the diversity of each is enriching for us all

Sanofi believes our people are the single most important asset for our future development.

In light of today's growing interest in the relationship between chronic disease and the work environment, we see protecting employees' health and well-being as an important duty of care that also minimises our exposure to risk, and have therefore developed management systems specifically to address these issues.

Planet - our duty of care to the environment we all share

Limiting our carbon footprint and energy consumption is part of our ambitious climate change policy that is a key priority for the Group.  Part of this process has involved the launch of several successful initiatives to reduce water consumption across the company.  We also constantly seek to minimise the greenhouse gases emitted by our processes and reduce the energy they consume.
